What is an ICP? Define yours in an afternoon

ICP stands for ideal customer profile. It is a short, written description of the company most likely to buy from you, stay with you, and be happy. Everything else in lead generation gets easier once you have one.

Why bother?

Without an ICP, every company looks like a possible customer, so you chase everyone and convert almost no one. With an ICP, you know exactly who to search for, what to say to them, and — just as useful — who to ignore.

Step 1: Look at your best customers

If you already have customers, list your five best. Best means: they bought quickly, they use the product, they stayed. If you are brand new, list five companies you believe would get the most value from what you sell.

Step 2: Find what they share

Look for traits they have in common:

  • Industry — what do they do?
  • Size — how many employees?
  • Location — which countries or cities?
  • Situation — what was happening when they needed you?

Step 3: Write it down

One or two sentences is enough. For example:

"Independent logistics companies in Western Europe with 20–200 employees that still manage shipments in spreadsheets."

Short, specific, and easy to argue with — that is a good ICP.

Step 4: Turn it into filters

In Clapleads Atlas, open the ICP Builder and translate each trait into a filter: industry keywords, countries, size bands, and so on. Save it. Now every search can start from your ICP instead of from zero, and your whole team targets the same companies.

Step 5: Test and refine

Run a search with your ICP filters and read through a page of results. Too broad? Tighten a filter. Too narrow or empty? Loosen one. Your ICP is a living thing — revisit it after every batch of real conversations.

Common mistakes

  • Too broad. "Companies that need marketing" is not an ICP.
  • Based on hope, not evidence. Start from real customers when you can.
  • Never updated. Markets move; check your ICP every quarter.

Once your ICP is saved, put it to work: build your first lead list or find companies similar to your best customers with lookalike search.
