Use case: a SaaS startup finding its first 100 customers

Honesty first: this is a playbook, not a customer story. Clapleads Atlas is new, and we will not invent success metrics. What follows is a realistic, step-by-step way an early-stage SaaS founder could use the platform — starting with the free plan.

The situation

Imagine a two-person startup selling scheduling software for field-service businesses. No brand, no inbound leads, no sales team. The founders need conversations — lots of them — with exactly the right companies.

Step 1: Write down ten dream customers

Before touching any tool, the founders list ten real companies they wish were customers. This forces clarity: what do these ten have in common? Industry, size, country, situation. That shared shape becomes the first ICP — for example: "field-service companies (HVAC, plumbing, electrical) with 10–100 employees in the UK and Ireland."

Step 2: Find the ten — then their lookalikes

The founders search for their ten dream companies in Clapleads Atlas, then run lookalike search on them. The result is a pool of companies with the same shape — most of which the founders had never heard of. That is the point: a good database knows more company names than any founder does.

Step 3: Export small, learn fast

The Free plan includes 50 export credits a month, so the founders export 25 companies — not 2,500. They write to those 25 with short, specific, honest emails (the rules in cold outreach and the law apply — the sender is responsible). Then they read every reply, including the "no thanks" ones.

Step 4: Refine the ICP with real signal

Replies are data. If plumbing companies answer and HVAC companies do not, the ICP gets sharper. The founders adjust their filters, export the next small batch, and repeat. Each cycle costs little — searching is free, and 25–50 credits a month fit inside the free plan while the message finds its footing.

Step 5: Scale what works

Once a batch converts conversations into demos consistently, it is time to widen the funnel: upgrade to Starter ($39/mo, 1,000 credits), export bigger slices of the matching universe, and keep the same discipline — tight filters, small batches, honest emails, fast follow-up on opt-outs (suppressed contacts are removed from every export automatically).

Why small batches beat big blasts

  • A 25-email batch can be personally written; a 2,500-email blast cannot.
  • Early replies teach you who your customer actually is — before you spend real money.
  • Tight targeting is also what anti-spam law expects of you. Good practice and good compliance point the same way.

The first 100 customers are found one honest conversation at a time. The database just makes sure you never run out of the right companies to start them with. Start free.
